Personal Background

I am originally from southwest Michigan and have spent all of my life, except for three years, in this area.

Born in St. Joseph, Michigan in 1971, my family moved from its residence in South Haven, Michigan to Saugatuck, Michigan when I was four years old. For those of you that may not know, Saugatuck is a quaint idyllic town that sits along the Kalamazoo River and is only minutes from Lake Michigan.

Saugatuck has a unique history having started as a city known as Singapore, a lumbering town, closer to the mouth of the river where it meets Lake Michigan.

Singapore is now a ghost town covered by years of shifting sands.

Saugatuck was a child’s dream.

We were able to ride our bikes everywhere (including crossing the river at the ferry to go downtown for a quarter), play in the woods, go to the beach, and as I got older, play golf.

The schools provided an outstanding education and opportunities to engage in all types of activities.

The schools supported strong arts programs and the athletic program was always the center of attention throughout the school year.
